Trying to be perfect, aka a perfectionist and always trying to do the best, certainly has a good side. But actually, it's no secret that the perfectionist attitude also has a negative impact, one of which is that it can weaken our productivity.

Many studies explain that this perfectionist attitude can cause a person to miss good opportunities, procrastinate work, stress to feel frustrated with themselves and others. In addition, this perfectionist attitude can also lead to procrastination, you know!

Procrastination or procrastination is the act of delaying unnecessary decisions or actions. For example, if we need to write an essay for a college assignment, but we delay doing it and instead play social media. In the end, time is wasted, even though on the other hand we know if we have a deadline.

When faced with a decision to make or a task to complete, we usually have an inner motivation that can push us to get things done. In addition, motivation also makes us do something so that it is finished on time.


However, procrastination is in fact more complex. From a psychological point of view, there are various demotivating factors that we can experience that have the opposite effect of motivation which makes a person more inclined to procrastinate. For example, anxiety, fear of failure, perfectionism and other negative emotions that can cause us to procrastinate and do unnecessary things.

The study found that most people focus on the answers, “I'm not sure what I'm doing”, “I don't know where to start”, to “I'm not sure it's going to be good enough.”


So when we feel we are not good enough and focus on perfection, we forget how to solve it. As a result, we are confused about the steps we want to take until a sense of doubt arises and leads to procrastination.


How to handle it?


There are many ways that can be done to overcome this problem. Doing the best, not demanding perfection, is the right choice. If we continue to procrastinate doing something because we are looking for the perfect thing, that means, we must be vigilant. In fact, striving for your best is important, but demanding perfection is difficult!


In addition, we can also manage time by making a list of all the things we have to do related to the job. Including, turning off social media notifications.


If you are really unprepared and have difficulty controlling yourself, asking for help from coworkers or group friends to share, to consulting a psychologist can be done to relieve the perfectionist attitude that makes all our work delayed.


Overcoming perfectionism that causes procrastination will also help us increase productivity and reduce stress. Because by delaying starting work or often missing deadlines, we are actually sabotaging ourselves and the success that will be achieved.
