Many people compete to hone their speaking skills, by looking for good public speaking tips on the internet, taking public speaking classes, to self-taught whether it's for pitching, or for persuasive or marketing purposes. However, we often forget about the importance of listening to others.

We've been trained to speak, that's why there are more public speaking courses and very few, or even almost no deep listening courses. In fact, "to be a good speaker, be a good listener first."

If you are not a good listener, you will not be able to understand other people's point of view. So, some people generally don't really care about listening skills. In fact, communication is never a complete process without being a good listener.

To be a good listener, you must be an active listener. Active listening is very useful for helping others to express their emotions and gain validation for their emotions. Well, here are 3 tips to become an active listener that you can do to become a good listener.

1. Listen with an Open Mind

The most important thing in the listening process is to listen with an open mind. You have to be open to seeing problems from the other person's point of view and assuming that if you were in their shoes. Never compare their experience to your own or anyone else's.

2. Show That You Listen and Empathize

Listen not only with your ears, but with your eyes and heart. Show that you listen to them and avoid interrupting their conversation let alone patronizing them.

You don't have to agree with them all the time, but try to imagine if you were in their shoes, and always remember that the emotions they are releasing are valid.

3. Give Feedback

All of your assumptions, judgments, and personal beliefs can distort what you hear. As a listener, your role is to understand what they are saying.

This may require you to reflect on what they have to say and ask questions to avoid misunderstandings. Also, respond to what they say with an open mind and avoid being judgmental.
